History of caterers manchester, caterers salford, Melias

Melias was first established as a sandwich bar in 1982 and not long after, it started to develop the side of the business. With it's fast growing reputation as the leader in Gourmet style lunchtime sandwiches, Melias soon became the number one Sandwich Bar in the region, winning numerous awards for it's innovative range of fillings.

Newspaper and Television coverage helped enhance Melias reputation and the queues at their first shop in John Dalton Street often had as many as 100 people waiting to get served for their 'Specials of the Week'.

In the early eighties, Corporate was quite new and most companies would take their clients out to lunch in the city centre restaurants. This was expensive and time consuming. Melias was one of the first Sandwich Bars to introduce 'Platters of assorted sandwiches' usually served with a bowl of fruit and maybe some crisps. It wasn't long before Melias created a more sophisticated choice of 'Platters' with Sausage Rolls, Dinky Pork Pies, Vol au Vents and Chicken Drumsticks etc. being on offer along with a good selection of Cakes. This side of the business became busier and Melias soon developed this niche in the market place and started offering all sorts of Sundry items to improve these . Cold drinks, disposable plates, cups and serviettes were all provided. Melias all day Service also became extremely popular, allowing secretaries to type instead of brewing up.

Today the same choices are still available but trendier options have constantly been added to give greater choice and variety. 'Diversity' are very popular on Melias Menu choices. Chinese, Thai, Indian, Malaysian, Middle-Eastern, Mediterranean (including Greek, Turkish, Italian And Spanish), Caribbean and Traditional British delicacies are readily available. Melias has now become synonymous with companies requiring Ethnic, Religious, Vegetarian, Vegan and Other Special Dietary requirements.

Melias has built an enviable reputation for it's Halal Food and holds a certificate which guarantees the food is 100% Halal. Melias has won awards for it's imaginative Vegetarian Menus with unique style sandwiches developed using it's proprietors expertise as a highly qualified Chef. It also offers kosher style Buffets with lots of choice and variety.

Melias was one of the official caterers for the Manchester 2000 Commonwealth Games and was the first Stadium Conference Rooms for a catering event.

As a qualified Chef and Hotel Manager the proprietor of Melias, Mervin Hershon, first used his knowledge and experience to develop airline-catering menus working for Qantas in Australia. His job was to travel around the Far East and plan Menus for Qantas, B.O.A.C (now British Airways) American Airways, South African Airways and Air New Zealand. He had a great experience of producing cold buffets for the Royal Family on their visit to Australia and New Zealand in 1971.

He has used this experience to develop another trend in catering for small or large numbers where the locations don't lend themselves to . He has developed a range of 'Picnic Bags'. These bags start at 3.30 per head and rise to about 15.00 depending on requirements. They are used at Cricket matches, Open Air Concerts Sporting occasions (most recently for the volunteer staff at the BUPA sponsored Greater Manchester Run) and on a regular basis for Health and Safety training courses where workers and trainees are out on site. All catering requirements are available from Melias including Event Organisation, Cooking and Waiting Staff. A full Hire Service of crockery, cutlery, glassware and Furniture is available. Marquees and Canopies can also be provided with lighting, dance floors and portable toilets if required.
